Street Dance & Hip Hop at Stage 84

Street Dance is a new dance class at Stage 84 offering group tuition for all ages. In this class the students have the opportunity to develop technique in this popular style of dance, taught by experienced choreographer and professional dancer Amy Watkins. Drawing inspiration from recent dance sensations ‘Diversity’ and other similar street dance crews, the students in this class learn how to put together a polished piece of choreography as well as developing improvisation skills. The students are also introduced to break dancing, focusing on tricks, flips and free style work. One of the overall focuses in this class is confidence in performance. The students will work towards performance pieces each term which will either be shown for an examination or performed in live concerts and shows. We also teach skills in choreography and preparing dance pieces.

Skills covered in the Street Dance programme include:
- Modern Jazz technique
- Gymnastic training
- Flips and somersaults
- Tricks / free style
- Head spins
- Limbering / flexibility
- Strength development
- Partner work / lifts
- Performance development
- Improvisation
- Choreographic training
- Isolations / popping
- Creative development
- Floor work
- Step development
- Musical interpretation / stylisation

All students involved in the Stage 84 Street Dance Programme will be entered for IDTA (International Dance Teachers Association) examinations. These examinations help develop technical skills as well as building confidence in performance. At Stage 84 we also feel that examination work helps to give recognition for the students’ hard work and improvement throughout their training. The IDTA is a highly respected international board whose dance qualifications are an asset for anyone wanting to embark on a career in performance. Each student will perform a number of dance routines in front of an IDTA examiner who will grade the performance on rhythmic interpretation, presentation, technical ability, use of foot work and arms. The grades then add up to a final mark.

Street Dance classes will regularly feature:
Warm up  |  Corner work  |  Creative task
Rehearsal of ongoing work  | Gymnastic training
